The Danger of Saltwater Crocodiles can be underestimated – Please be croc- wise!
Even though the danger of saltwater crocodiles is relatively small, and attacks towards humans relatively rare, when they happen, they are often fatal. It is crucial to know how to behave around waterways inhabited by “salties”. Don’t tempt your faith and be croc- wise!
Since they can no longer be hunted, saltwater crocodiles are growing in number in the Northern Territory, and perhaps have never been this dangerous. Salties can be very territorial, so as their numbers increase, they can become more aggressive if competition for food increases. However, many people don’t seem to realise the danger of saltwater crocodiles. When visiting the Top End, make sure you stay well away from the water’s edge where salties might be present. Saltwater crocodiles are great at hiding and they only need a few centimetres of water over the top of them to be completely invisible in slightly murky waters. The shape of their back allows them to move through the water without causing any ripples on the surface. Their powerful tale allows them to leap several metres in one sudden move to attack their pray. Even if you see other people close to the water, fishing or swimming, always double check if it’s safe. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, because if a croc decides to attack, it’s pretty clear who will win… It is important to respect these large and powerful animals in their natural environment!
