Everyone loves s’mores when camping, but how about trying something new the next time you are cooking on a campfire? Here are some ideas that are easy to prepare and super delicious:
Caramel banana boats
You need:
- Bananas
- Your choice of either caramel filled chocolate, mini mars bars or similar
- Pre purchased chilled vanilla custard
Slice your banana, with skin on, along the top. Wedge a few pieces of your chosen chocolate, mars bar etc. in the sliced banana, and place on your BBQ plate with a low to medium fire heat beneath. Wait until the chocolate is melted and banana is hot, or even slightly stewed. Serve in the skin with vanilla custard poured over the top. Simply eat from the skin using a spoon. You can get creative with this recipe and try different fillings, such as marshmallows, fruit or nuts. Great way to use bananas bruised in transit, and really simple, fast and easy to prepare.
Easy Apple Crumble
You need:
- Apples
- Cinnamon
- Scotch finger or shortbread biscuits
- Pre purchased thick cream and/ or chilled vanilla custard
Another great way to use leftover fruit or fruit bruised on rough roads. Core and cut your apples into small pieces and loosely wrap in foil with some cinnamon. You can use your camp oven if preparing a large serve. Place on BBQ plate on low to medium heat. After around 20 minutes your apples should be stewed. Serve in bowls and top with your crumbled biscuits, cream and/ or custard. Easy and delicious!
Peach Crumble
You need:
- Can of sliced peaches
- 150gr flour
- 100gr butter
- 85gr sugar
- Cinnamon
- Pre purchased chilled vanilla custard
(approx. 4 serves)
Of course you can use your camp oven to make this dessert as well. For a simple peach crumble, line your camp oven with foil (optional), then drain peach slices and place in oven. Mix flour and butter in a bowl, add in sugar and some cinnamon (you can also use any crumble recipe, for example with rolled oats, if you prefer). Top peach slices with crumble mix, place the lid on your camp oven and bake for around 35-45 minutes. Serve with custard.
Sweet cones
You need:
- Waffle ice cream cones
- Foil
- Fillings of your choice (think mini marshmallows, smarties, chocolate, berries…)
Fill your ice cream cones with your chosen fillings and wrap in foil. Place on BBQ plate or coals until warm. Yum!
Lazy cake
You need:
- Cake base
- Toppings of your choice (fruit, chocolate, marshmallows)
Time to be creative again: Place cake base in your camp oven and decorate with your favourite toppings. This works great with fresh fruit, chocolate sprinkles and a layer of marshmallows on top. Place your camp oven on hotplate over your medium heat coals/ fire until cooked.
Grown up Marshmallows
You need:
- Marshmallows
- Toasting sticks
- Baileys
Yes, that’s right- marshmallows for grownups with a sweet tooth. Roast your marshmallows on a stick and dip them into Baileys liquor. Delicious!
